Time is as elusive as truth, barks Carrick, the hard-bitten News Editor. And when Lucas, a young and ambitious journalist, finds himself disoriented by fear and lies in Haiti, Carrick's words resonate. Sent to research promised elections, Lucas is unexpectedly caught up in huge street protests. The airport closes, communications are cut, and his reports lead world headlines. Haunted by his past and confused by the present, Lucas is befriended by the revolutionary Marie. He must remain the objective observer, she is totally committed to the uprising. Between them, they may have the power to topple a dictator but in Haiti life can be cruelly short.
Lucas is tormented by the idea that he could have prevented his sister's death. He still sees her, talks to her, confides in her. But his haunting is a closely guarded secret. His Editor would never have sent him to Haiti if he thought that Lucas's desire to go was partly fuelled by an interest in voodoo and the fact that many in Haiti believe that the dead exert a tangible influence over the living.
Lucas is supposed to be researching sent a documentary but he is swiftly overwhelmed by the terrible battle that unfolds between unarmed protesters and an army determined to keep a dictator in power. Surrounded by violence, fear and poverty, Lucas finds death is ever present and his search for solace sets him on a path that will define the rest of his life or kill him.
