The story begins with Max standing in front of a jewelry store in New York City, eyeing an engagement ring with a mixture of excitement and doubt. After years of wandering the world and avoiding commitments, Max has fallen deeply in love with Sarah, a woman who grounded him and brought clarity to his once-chaotic life. But as he prepares to propose, his long-time friendship with Lily begins to complicate his emotions. Max has always shared a deep bond with Lily, his best friend from college, and their relationship has remained platonic-until now. As he spends more time with Lily, he starts to realize that his feelings for her might run deeper than he ever admitted. While Sarah is everything he thought he wanted, Lily represents something else entirely: familiarity, deep understanding, and a shared history.
