When the city cuts funding for the Crawford Park Warriors, it feels like the end of the road-not just for a football team, but for an entire community.
Fourteen-year-old Durel Gates knows football is more than a game. It's hope. It's purpose. And when their coach walks away and the team is left without support, uniforms, or equipment, the boys of Oakleigh Heights are forced to face a hard truth: no one is coming to save them.
So they decide to fight back.
Through grit, teamwork, and determination, Durel and his teammates hustle for every dollar, rally their neighborhood, and refuse to let their team disappear. What begins as a fight to save a season turns into something much bigger-a movement that restores pride, unity, and belief in what's possible.
Against the Odds is an inspiring story about resilience, leadership, and the power of community. Perfect for middle-grade readers, families, and classrooms, it reminds us that even when everything seems stacked against you, heart and perseverance can change the game.
