The daughter of a business magnate escapes to an artistic retreat that contains more secrets-and more passion-than she could have ever imagined, from #1 New York Times bestselling author of Salt to the Sea.
Our family business is windshields, Marjorie. Glass. An entire fortune built on sand. There's a deep irony there.
Twenty-year-old Marjorie Lennox has a passion for art, not automobiles, much to her family's dismay. It's the height of prohibition in the Motor City, and the Lennox family is among the ranks of the auto aristocracy.
Despite their so-called empire, the foundation of the Lennox family is far from stable. There is a festering rift over the succession of the company, newspapers are eager for gossip, and every family member harbors their own secrets.
Desperate to pursue her love of fashion away from the overbearing schemes of her family, Marjorie sneaks off to attend an immersive art residency for women. Run by the elusive industry titan Charles Bonafante, the residency seems like the only opportunity for Marjorie to be taken seriously as an artist.
But all isn't as it seems. Another resident, a reclusive writer who never leaves her room, insists the building is haunted. A furniture maker hears screaming at night. And all the while, Marjorie can't help being drawn to the enigmatic, alluring Bonafante. As Marjorie unravels the residency's mysteries, she finds herself in a web of intrigue with ties to blackmail, corruption, and maybe even love.
