Ten-year-old Danny Madsen has been missing for four days when his godfather, Jesse Carlton, refuses to give up the search. On a frigid night in Hingham, Massachusetts, Jesse is driving a deserted road beside miles of conservation land when Danny suddenly bursts from the woods. Jesse hits the brakes. The car spins on black ice. And in one horrifying instant, every life connected to the boy is changed forever.
When Jesse awakens after the crash, the crucial moments are missing from his memory. Danny is still gone. There is no body, no witness, and no explanation for what happened on that road. But Jesse cannot escape the guilt clawing at him-or the disturbing flashes that suggest his mind may be hiding something unbearable.
The truth is even darker.
Charles Hastings, Danny's abductor, watched the accident from the woods. Twisted by a childhood of brutality and convinced that kidnapping children is an act of love, Charles blames Jesse for destroying the "family" he intended to create. As the police and FBI struggle to find Danny, Charles begins a calculated campaign of revenge-planting evidence, invading Jesse's life, and pushing an innocent man toward suspicion, isolation, and psychological collapse.
Soon Danny's grieving parents are forced to question the man they have trusted for decades. Jesse's wife fights to hold their marriage together. And FBI agent Antonio Rivera races to expose a predator who has already learned how easily grief can be turned into doubt.
As the evidence mounts and Jesse's reality begins to fracture, one question becomes impossible to ignore: Is he being framed for a monstrous crime-or is his damaged mind protecting him from the truth?
A Broken Reality is a dark, emotionally charged psychological thriller about abduction, guilt, friendship, and the devastating power of a lie repeated until it becomes believable. With escalating suspense, deeply human characters, and a finale that refuses to loosen its grip, Rob Kaufman delivers a haunting story of how quickly love can become obsession-and how completely one tragedy can destroy everything left behind.
