A Southern novel in the tradition of Anne Tyler and Anne Rivers Siddons, A Better Place marks the adult fiction debut of one of television's most successful and creative writers In an attempt to discover why her life hasn't worked out the way she had hoped it would, Valerie Caldwell returns to the Southern town she left twelve years earlier to visit her old haunts and two friends from her school days, Tess and Mary Grace-much to their alarm and chagrin.
"Hall writes a fine novel of manners about life in the South. This deep, thoughtful work is highly recommended."
Library Journal
"Barbara Hall wrote many of the nearly perfect scripts for the TV series, I'll Fly Away. That talent is equally evident in her first novel, A Better Place."
Chicago Tribune
"The author's insight into her characters' mixed motivations, her keen sense of humor, and her accurate portrayals of both small-town life and Los Angeles lifestyles makes this a more-than-usually engaging read."
