Frustrated with his lonely life, neuroses, and dead-end career, 40-year-old Seth Harper decides to finally take charge. After an ad pitch by Blake, a salesman for a company called Everhead, he spends his life savings to get Persona, a cutting-edge "personality upgrade" uploaded to his Cell, the information uplink almost everyone has installed in their brain. Things are going great after getting his new personality: he says goodbye to his psychiatrist, he's not worried about his future, and, most importantly, he's got a date with Emily, a beautiful girl who actually seems to like him. But things start going awry when he gets chased out of a bar by a bunch of guys in black suits. He finds Blake to get an answer only to find that there was a glitch during the installation of the Persona upgrade. Seth, his internal identifying him as "Willis Rowe" a renegade hacker, goes on the run, hearing voices, unsure of who he even is anymore. Even Emily turns out not who he thought she was. Seth has to find out the truth before he loses his mind-and his life.
