A drunken Robert Merivel accidentally cures one of the King's spaniels and as a result becomes a court favorite. He is even given a fine home in Norfolk as a reward of taking care of the King's mistress. However, when he is no longer favored by King and court, he relies on the aid of his friend, John Peirce, who introduces Robert to the Quaker religion.
