"It is because I think so much of warm and sensitive hearts, that I would spare them from being wounded."
Orphan Oliver Twist is born into the grimmest of 19th century English workhouses and had little but a life of grinding poverty ahead of him. But he's a fighter and after being evicted from the workhouse for asking for 'more' and surviving a stint as an undertaker's assistant, he hopes to change his circumstances so walks to London where he meets Artful Dodger, a member of a pickpocketing gang, and their leader, Fagin.
Oliver throws himself into a life of petty crime but things change again and soon he finds himself in the home of the wealthy Mr. Brownlow. Yet even there he isn't safe from Fagin and his dangerous colleague Bill Sykes…
Full of twists and turns, this vivid, loved story moves towards a dramatic climax where forces threaten the love and belonging Oliver craves.
