Ava Sinclair has spent most of her adult life carrying a quiet love for Jacob Hart her childhood best friend turned almost-lover, the one who always slipped through her fingers but never left her heart. When he shows up in her life again after years apart, older and softer around the edges, the spark they once ignored ignites into something undeniable. For one blissful, unforgettable week in the sleepy seaside town of Tidehaven, Ava and Jacob finally give in to their long-held feelings. They dance beneath streetlamps, talk about the lives they could build, and fall asleep tangled together, hearts open, futures spoken aloud. Jacob tells her he's done running. He's here to stay. With her.
But the next morning, Jacob is gone.
No note. No call. No trace.
Ava is devastated. The man who promised forever vanished without a word. Everyone tells her to forget, to move on, but how do you let go of someone who felt like fate?
Five years later, Ava has rebuilt her life. She's opened a small bookstore café, made peace with the ache in her chest, and learned how to laugh again. Then Jacob walks through her door.
He's changed. Haunted. Still in love.
He says he never meant to leave. That he was taken.
As Ava grapples with the fury and tenderness still warring inside her, the truth unfolds: a tragic accident, a coma, a family secret that kept him away and a choice he made, once he awoke, that he now regrets every day.
But can love survive five years of silence?
When He Was Mine is a sweeping, emotional journey through heartbreak, healing, and the question we all ask at least once in our lives: What if the one that got away... came back?
