From the author of Imperfect Women, a propulsive psychological drama about a young woman swept into a deranged world of power, sex, and violence while spending a summer working for a famous writer.
How far would you go to take back the story of your life?
When 23-year-old Hope Jenkins applied for an apprenticeship with the award-winning and influential writer Mr. Rosie Glencourt, she never thought she'd actually get it. Eager and bright-eyed, Hope arrives at Shadowlands, Rosie's eerie, otherworldly mansion, ready for the summer that will change her life. And it does-just not in the way she wanted.
Shadowlands is unlike any home Hope has ever known, ruled by secrets and desire. Transfixed by the seductive lives of Rosie and his enigmatic wife, Delia, and increasingly enamored with a young man, Tom, who lives on the sprawling property, Hope soon realizes she's willing to do anything to secure her place among them. Instead she is ousted, forced to leave Shadowlands with a broken heart and blood on her hands.
Ten years later, Hope is living in self-imposed exile. She has no family, no friends, no future. But when she picks up Rosie's newest novel, a runaway bestseller titled The Ruined Girl, she discovers it's an almost exact retelling of her story: the work, the sex, the gunshot that ended it all. It is everything Hope swore to keep hidden, dragged out onto center stage. And it's made Rosie more famous than ever.
Propulsive, riveting, and surprisingly tender, Unreliable Narrator explores ambition, revenge, and the lies we tell ourselves. Araminta Hall is the author of four novels, including Imperfect Women and Our Kind of Cruelty. She has an MA in creative writing and authorship from the University of Sussex and teaches creative writing in Brighton, where she lives with her husband and three children.
