In the aftermath of her husband's terrible accident, Elsa faces the many challenges of living in a house in the woods of rural Wisconsin while caring for their two small children and coping with the near-daily miscommunications with her in-laws. As time passes, she forges her own relationship with nature, taking comfort in the trees that her husband had loved so much. Through a gauntlet of hardship, she discovers her own strength and capabilities and learns when to ask for help from the people who love her.
Drawn from her own lived experiences, Dunbar vividly describes the wonder and harshness of life off the grid. Told over the course of a year, The Net Beneath Us is a timely novel that captures the loneliness and beauty of one woman persevering in the natural world.
