Leila has been waiting to be a mother—ever since she lost her own. Now she's pregnant, it's bittersweet. Her partner isn't sure he's ready for fatherhood and she doesn't know if she can have this baby by herself. Erica is used to being a tower of strength for other women: it's a privilege to help children into this world. When she's assigned to Leila, though, a chance conversation reveals a secret connection between the two women. Living far from the closest hospital, Erica suggests a homebirth—but as they start to build a birth-plan, Leila begins to realise her midwife has a very different idea of what's going to happen. As the weeks tick down, Erica always seems to be at Leila's side. Caring, watching, waiting... When the day finally comes and Erica turns the dial on the gas and air she's brought along, Leila realises she's left it far too late to run.
