On a simple, idyllic world, one man appears and seizes control with his magical powers, herds the inhabitants off their land and forces them into mines.
Now bored in his elaborate palace, he runs a competition that selects the most talented as his royal opponent in the strategy game Gymbal.
But the winner, Rhonwyn, having watched her father murdered by this tyrant years before, has been secretly recruited by the Resistance.
To win this game, however, she must make a choice between escape and unexpected love, between freedom for her people and the sacrifice of an innocent man.
'Susan Holt's new release had me hooked from the first page. A perfect read for those who want to dip their toes into fantasy and be transported to another world, one that is both familiar and mysterious, with complexities of character, place and possibilities that'll have you craving a sequel before you're even halfway through.' - Vanessa Evetts, author of 'Out of the Ashes'
'More twists and turns than a game of Gymbal, and you won't see them coming.' - Philippa Werry, author of 'The Telegram'
