About

This intensely relatable historical novel-in-verse follows the young adult years of the exceptionally talented tortured poet, Sylvia Plath, as she casts off the limiting expectations of American women and forges her own path. Perfect for fans of Girl in Pieces.

Sylvia Plath knows she was born to be remembered. She loves learning, literature, and writing, especially poetry. The problem is, she's coming of age in a time when women are expected to happily set aside their dreams for a husband and a home. Even in high school, Sylvia struggles to reconcile the societal expectations placed on women and the ambitions she has for a great career. She aches for a partner and a family, but she longs to become a poet, too. And she's afraid she can't have both.

Covering her high school and college years, and capturing her many highs and lows as she wrestled with her mental health and blazing talent, Love, Sivvy is a beautifully rendered portrait of one of the most incandescent poets of all time.

R.L. Toalson grew up running wild through corn rows and cow-grazing fields and recording true and wildly exaggerated false tales to entertain her friends, family members, and anyone who would listen. She still runs (literally) wild through the streets of her city and spends most of her days recording true (if a little exaggerated) and false tales to entertain anyone who will listen. She lives in San Antonio, Texas, with her one brilliant husband, six delightful children, and two arrogant cats. She's the award-winning author of multiple books for young readers, including the highly acclaimed THE FIRST MAGNIFICENT SUMMER and the forthcoming LOVE, SIVVY, a novel in verse about Sylvia Plath's young adult years.

Reviews

"This audiobook, told in verse, explores Sylvia Plath's formative years. Some of the narrative effect may be lost in the audio format, but Jennifer Jill Araya navigates the text well. Delivered with a consistently forceful pace, Araya's Plath has a childlike quality that seems appropriate for this period in her life. Araya ably shifts among supporting characters' voices with effectively subtle changes. The audiobook format highlights how repetitive the narrative can be-Plath rails against 1950s societal expectations of women and writhes within the confines of her own self-doubt again and again-without really exploring Plath's writing or creative process. Despite the novel's weaker qualities, Araya captures the emotion and turmoil in Plath's youthful voice. (Verse fiction. 14-18)"
