In the 32nd year of Jiajing's reign (1553), Hai Rui, who failed the college entrance examination, came to Nanping county, Fujian province to serve as the director of the education bureau and entered the official career. At the beginning of his career in officialdom, Hai Rui had no money, no connections, no background, no resources, and even no diploma. However, he was such a poor young man that he became famous in a short period of five years. When Jiajing was in office, he was promoted to the post of director of the national finance department.
