About

Fourteen-year-old Ellis is getting ready to leave the Southwest for a boarding school in the East. This means leaving behind the only real father he has ever known, Goat Man. Goat Man has been raising a herd of goats all the while teaching Ellis the meaning of stability, caretaking, and commitment. And when a skeptical Ellis returns for spring break, he and Goat Man will be forced to re-evaluate their relationship.

Reviews

"Surprisingly winning...Goats has a mellow, sidelong charm and an intelligence that sneaks up on you."
Washington Post
"[Mark Jude] Poirier's character study is full of dark humor and over the top characters but manages to humanize them all enough to make the story work. ...[Ray] Porter is at best when he is tackling complicated character, and Goats is a playground for his skills. For each character, Porter finds the root of their persona and brings it to life."
