They recommended it to me and I was skeptical… and now I'm the one recommending it
A friend recommended Enja's Battle to me. She said, "You're going to like it, and it's going to surprise you." Honestly, I didn't believe her. I don't usually read historical novels, and even less when they're part of a series. But one day I gave it a try. And well… I don't regret it.
I thought I wouldn't connect with Enja. At the beginning, I didn't understand what was supposed to be special about her. But little by little, I started getting into her rhythm. She's not a perfect heroine, nor a victim. She's someone who does what she can with what she has. And that hit me more than anything else.
I won't lie: some parts were tough for me. Not because they were boring, but because they were hard. But nothing feels gratuitous. Everything has a purpose.
Would I read it again? Yes. Will I read the rest of the series? I've already started looking for the first book. And yes… now I'm the one recommending it.
Good One
Eva Fellner's fourth volume in 'The Highlanderess' series represents a confident and structurally ambitious entry into the historical fiction canon. Set against the documented backdrop of the Bruce brothers' 1315 Irish campaign, 'Enja's Battle' demonstrates a commendable authorial command of period detail, weaving the geopolitical machinations of the Scottish independence struggle including the papal diplomacy of John XXII into a tightly constructed personal narrative.
The central dramatic tension rests upon a morally complex binary: vengeance versus mercy. This is not an uncommon thematic device within the genre, yet Fellner handles it with notable sophistication. Enja is neither a passive vessel of historical forces nor an anachronistic superheroine; she is a credibly rendered fourteenth-century woman navigating impossible choices within the constraints of her time. The introduction of an unnamed assassin as the primary antagonist serves as an effective structural mechanism, sustaining narrative urgency across multiple plot threads without overwhelming the character-driven core.
Good story
This book was a gift from a friend who knows I enjoy historical novels, even though I hadn't really connected with one in quite a while. It took me a few days to start it, and then I was surprised to find myself picking it up again every night without thinking much about it.
It's not a light story
