"Don't tell anyone we're Democrats," warned Mother when we moved to Bakersfield, CA, a town often referred to, back then, as redneck central. "And for heaven's sake, don't tell them you're Jewish." Joan Gratz, author and Academy Award winning director says: "I couldn't put this book down. The young Jewish narrator reminds me of Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird, only with a lot more humor. Watching this brazen, feisty girl butt up against a hostile landscape with humor, naive insight, and the missteps of youth, is what entertainment is all about."
