At 4:47 AM, Nora Vass wakes to her dog growling. Her front door stands open, the deadbolt withdrawn, yet her smart home system shows nothing. According to the technology Nora meticulously installed as an architect, nobody was there.
But Nora knows her house like a surgeon knows anatomy. She notices the shifts others dismiss: the thermostat adjusting at 3 AM, the voice assistant responding to unheard commands, lights extinguishing as she walks past, as if the house is closing behind her. To her ex-husband, her friend, and her therapist, it looks like anxiety. To Nora, it looks like a breach.
Everyone offers explanations, firmware glitches, stress, user error, but Nora has evidence. Timestamps shift. Logs contradict her eyes. Cameras record empty rooms while she hears footsteps in the hall.
She hires Dan Cole, a security consultant. What Dan finds isn't a glitch; it's a sophisticated, patient architecture of intrusion. Someone has been inside Nora's network for months, using her cameras and microphones to learn her habits, passwords, and fears. The attacker didn't break in; they have been living inside her digital walls.
As Dan maps the breach, the scope expands. Nora is the fourth victim in a sequence of twelve women targeted through the same systematic methodology. The first three were prototypes; Nora is the refinement. The next eight are already profiled and waiting.
Set in the Adelaide Hills, Australia, this forensic thriller explores a terrifying reality: the devices installed to make us feel safe have been turned into instruments of surveillance. As Nora and Dan hunt the source, they realize the person who built the system may no longer be the one running it.
For readers of The Woman in the Window and Dark Matter, this is a story about the technology already in your home and the person watching you through it.
