It's island living we seek on this episode of Travel Thru History! We visit a spectacular chain of islands off the Southern coast of Florida known as the Florida Keys. The keys have a rich history and culture distinct from the Florida mainland and her story is filled with pirate adventures, mystery and intrigue. The locals call it the Conch Republic and proudly hoist their flag in rebel defiance, just like their pirate past. First, we'll visit the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Museum, named for the famous Treasure. Mel and his dive crew discovered over $500 million dollars worth of Gold and Silver waiting patiently on the bottom of the Atlantic for over 450 years. Next, we'll set sail to the Dry Tortugas, a small group of islands discovered by the famous "Fountain of youth" seeker, Ponce De Leon. There, we'll tour the incredible Fort Jefferson. We'll learn how the Dry Tortugas got their name and what's become of it over the last half-a century. Finally American literature enthusiasts will enjoy a look at Ernest Hemmingway's Key West home, where some of his most famous works were penned.

2. Discover St. Augustine

We're traveling to the oldest city in the US and we'll find that it's as active as ever. We can't visit St. Augustine without letting you sample a drink from the Fountain of Youth! We show you the very spot where the city's history began. Then we're off to the Oldest Store Museum, to see some of the items available to turn-of-the-century Floridians. From there, we take a tour of the Lightner museum...where we'll find more than just fine art on display. Then we take you to the Castillo de San Marcos. It is the oldest masonry fort in the United States. It has also taken quite a beating. If these walls could talk they would have incredible stories of battles and grim history. Finally walk the plank at the popular Pirate Museum. You'll find a treasure chest full of pirate history and find out why they ruled the seas.

3. Discover Miami

Bienvenido a Miami! In this episode of Travel Thru History we head to the booming, metropolis and subtropical city of Miami. Miami is an international city, but there's more to experience than just gorgeous beaches in this Floridian hot spot. Miami is multi-international city that has more entertainment than you could possibly take in. From sipping Cuban café con leches in little Havana, to dining in the trendiest, celebrity-crawling restaurants, the city of Miami has something for everyone. We first take you to the oldest building in the Western Hemisphere, The Ancient Spanish Monastery. This jewel of Miami's was purchased from Spain and rebuilt stone by stone in 1953, making this the "the biggest jigsaw puzzle in history." Next, bring your bug spray and some alligator spray too, as we head to the heart of the Florida Everglades to learn how the Miccosukee Indian Tribe built their community in a swamp and how this tribe flourishes in the swamp to this day. Then we'll visit a little taste of Southern Europe right in the heart of as we visit the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens.

4. Discover St. Petersburg

Prepare to soak up the rays and visit some of the US's best beaches in beautiful, St. Petersburg Florida on todays Travel Thru History. There aren't too many places in the world that boast year-round sunshine, but St. Petersburg is one of them, with an average of about three hundred and sixty days a year. Combine St. Pete with its neighbors Clearwater and Tampa and you've got a world class vacation destination. St. Petersburg is a city of fascinating stories from innovations in aviation to cultural and artistic wonders. We'll visit The Salvador Dalí Museum and discover his famous surrealist style paintings and even more famous mustache. Tampa Bay was an important trade harbor for the US and that meant it needed to be protected from pirates of Caribbean. We'll check out Fort Desoto for a look at the really big canons needed to secure the bay. Tarpon Springs, a Greek community on the gulf coast, built sponge diving into an actual thriving economy. We'll visit the St. Pete History Museum and learn about the first ever commercial airline flight in the world from St. Pete to Tampa.

5. Discover Philadelphia

We're hanging out with our founding fathers on this episode of Travel Thru History as we visit the very place where revolutionaries, decried "Liberty will reign in America!" Today Philadelphia is a booming city that is as alive with new ideas today, as it was in 1776. We start our journey in Philly on foot with one of its best guides. Then we'll get thrown in the slammer as we get locked up inside the Eastern State Penitentiary. This prison is creepy enough to make anyone penitent. We'll get our inner "Eye of the Tiger" on and run up the famous steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, just like our favorite Philly man, Rocky Balboa. But inside the museum is just as epic as we get immersed in Art like never before. You can't go to Philly without seeing the birthplace of American Democracy, Independence Hall.

6. Discover Wilmington

We're taking you to a hotspot of family vacation fun and intrigue on this episode of Travel Thru History. Along the east coast of the United States there is a river that has struck terror in hearts of sea captains for centuries. It's also known for its pivotal role in American history. We are journeying by land and by sea in Wilmington, North Carolina. The city sits along the Cape Fear River and you will learn why it has rightfully earned its name as one of the most terrifying waters to navigate. If you're more of a land lover you'll appreciate visiting Market Street and Wilmington's Historic District, which is the heartbeat of downtown. Local residents are also proud of the important part Wilmington played in the Civil War and World War II. We take you to Fort Fisher, which served as a Confederate fort that protected the trade routes along the Cape Fear River. Then join us aboard the Henrietta, a Cape Fear Riverboat that gives you a look at Wilmington's history from the water. Our last stop is aboard another ship, the majestic USS North Carolina Battleship an incredible ship that served during World War II and was considered the world's greatest sea weapon.
