Only a few months have passed since detective Max and his wife-lawyer Asha lost their son. Life has almost come to a standstill when Max transfers to a new job at Oslo Homicide. Max is teamed up with detective Sander, who knows the underworld of Oslo and has no illusions. Where Max is an ethical and by-the-book detective, but also perhaps a bit naïve, Sander is hardened and bitter, and a tad racist. The two butt heads immediately. The men are called to the mysterious death of 4 young immigrant boys. There are no signs of violence or drugs, but there are eels at the crime see - strange. That night both detectives have vivid nightmares. Meanwhile, a storm hits the city. Streets and buildings are flooded. Max and Sander discover that a fifth boy was present at the scene of the crime

1. Eels

After the recent death of his son, detective Max Sørensen relocates to Oslo Homicide where he's teamed up with detective Sander Holm. They're sent to a crime scene - four immigrant teenagers drowned in an abandoned swimming pool. The detectives suspect foul play, but eels at the crime scene have a strange effect on the men's psyche. Meanwhile, Max's wife, Asha, begins her new career teaching law at the university, while Sander's mentally disabled brother, Bo, struggles with solitude. Swimming pool owner Thea informs the detectives that a fifth boy was at the pool; the detectives wonder if he's now dead just like the other four. A series of clues lead the men to small-time criminal, Rune Vik. He's distraught. Before killing himself, Rune assures the detectives: the boy is alive.

2. Cases Connect

The identities of all five boys come to light. Turns out the missing fifth boy, Jabrill, was awaiting trial for the murder of a beautiful young Norwegian law student, Sophie Næss. It was Max’s wife, Asha, who helped build the prosecution’s case against Jabrill. The detectives visit the detention center where Jabrill was being held, learning that a mysterious visitor came to see Jabrill just before his disappearance. Law student Magnus asks for Asha’s help in an upcoming academic trial. Bo visits the police station and has a chance meeting with Thea; he’s smitten. The detective’s nightmares worsen…reality and dreams starting to mix. An informant tells Sander that maybe a mysterious character by the name of Elo is behind what happened to the boys.

3. The Door

The murdered law student, Sophie Næss, turns out to have also been a high-class prostitute working with Karina Urdahl. The detectives locate Karina and her pimp, Remi. As they wait to make the bust, the two men bond. Sander explains that Bo’s brain injury comes from an immigrant brutally attacking Bo back in high school. Max tells Sander that he was witness to his son Oliver’s death; there’s nothing worse a parent can experience. The detectives take Karina and Remi into custody, finding an underage immigrant girl hidden in the house. That night, long-time family friend Marit tells Sander that Bo was mentally disabled before the attack in high school; he’s been brain damaged since birth. Bo has been lying to Sanders for years. A tip from Remi leads Max to a secret location in the woods, where Max discovers a door.

4. The Wait

The discovered door in the woods is an entrance to a bomb shelter, but the detectives must wait for Swat Team Delta to make risk assessments before they can conduct a raid; it’s frustrating to wait. At the same time Sander faces scrutiny for a past case – immigrant teenager Dalmar has hung himself in a detention center for a crime Sander arrested him for. Questions swirl around Dalmar’s actual guilt. Sander confronts Bo about the past, but Bo is cagey in his response. After discovering some of Sander’s shady police tactics, Max confronts him. The two men physically fight. Asha successfully defends Magnus in his academic trial but then has suspicions that Magnus might be harboring darker secrets. When Max gets information from the underage immigrant girl, they understand that other girls might be held captive in the bomb shelter. Max, Sander, and Delta begin the raid.

5. The Raid

The detectives discover a human trafficking ring operating out of the shelter. They save the girls, but Max then shoots and kills the man running it. The killing was unjustified. In the ensuing Internal Affairs investigation, both Max and Sander lie about what happened, saving Max’s career. Max confesses to Asha that he wonders if he could have prevented Oliver’s death but didn’t because Oliver was such a difficult child; the guilt is eating Max alive. Looking back through her old cases, Asha realizes Jabrill didn’t kill Sophie Næss. But then, who did? The detectives identify the man running the human trafficking ring – Halvar Evensen. When they visit his home by a small lake, they discover pictures of Sander.

6. It's Real

Both Sander and Max experience hallucinations that turn real; they’re violent against Bo and Asha, respectively. Scrutiny over Sander’s handling of Dalmar case escalates, while Asha begins to suspect Magnus is guilty of murdering Sophie Næss. Halvar’s home is actually owned by Kim, Sander’s ex-partner. When interrogated, Kim plays innocent about Halvar’s involvement in the human trafficking ring, but does relay that her other stepson works at the same detention center where Jabrill escaped. Bo and Thea spend time together, but once Thea realizes the depth of Bo’s mental disabilities, she ends things in a disruptive way. While headed back to the detention center, the detectives have a joint hallucination.
