It's been a bumpy two months since Detective Sergeant Ariki Davis used his investigative skills and his second sight to uncover who killed his best friend. Now a strict new boss arrives at Queenstown CIB to clean up the mess that Stephen Tremaine left behind. Ariki attempts to prove himself, but when another body is found at One Lane Bridge, his second sight interferes with the investigation.

After the murder trial, Ariki is put on desk duty and ordered to prove himself by his strict new boss, Senior Sergeant Pounamu Edwards, who's been sent to Queenstown to clean up the station. Determined to do everything by the book, Ariki must decide how to balance his life as a cop and the troublesome burden of his second sight when he discovers a body at One Lane Bridge.

Placed in charge of the homicide investigation, Ariki must mentor his adversary Tilly Gardner, who has joined the detective training program. Ariki battles his ghosts and gets an early win, which connects him with dodgy local tradesmen. His focus is tested, however, when he is pulled back to One Lane Bridge by an innocent young woman in desperate need of spiritual guidance.

With the discovery of a second body, the stakes escalate for Ariki and Tilly as they work out how the two dead men are connected. Ariki is put in the orbit of American aeronautical billionaires Noel and Caleb Kennard, whose money and privilege make Ariki's job impossible, adding to the immense pressure he is already under.
