About

This is the little-known story of Prince John, the youngest child of George V and Queen Mary, whose short life spanned a momentous period in history - the political build-up to the First World War. This drama tells the very human story of a unique family and an extraordinary boy. Diagnosed as an epileptic, Prince John was unable to participate in public life and became increasingly isolated from his family. This landmark drama recounts his life, from the struggles of growing up in the most unconventional circumstances, to the strength he drew from the unfailing support of his devoted Nanny.

1. Episode 1

1h 30m

Through the prism of Young Prince Johnnie's eyes, the grandeur and pomp of Edwardian Britain are unfurled. Johnnie is a charming boy, loved for his frankness by his grandfather, King Edward VII, uninhibited and with an eccentric view of the world quite alien to his parents. He also suffers from epilepsy and so he and his devoted nanny, Lalla, are to be exiled to Sandringham in Norfolk. Distanced from his father, King George V, and his mother, Queen Mary, he still remains a witness to the collapse of this apparently indestructible dynasty into the chaos of the First World War.

2. Episode 2

1h 30m

As if by accident the Royal families of Europe find their countries plunged into conflict and the young children of the monarch, George V, watch with bemusement as their elders become weighed down by the effects of the conflagration that has enveloped the continent. Through this tragedy, the bright spirit of Johnnie remains undimmed.
