1. Rites of Passage

1h

The dawn of a brilliant summer day at New Moon Farm. To all appearances, all is the same: the staid and quiet place it was upon Emily’s arrival four years ago. But Emily’s life is changing. As she prepares to take the entrance exam for high school, Emily is fraught with the insecurities of young adulthood. Her dream of being a writer suddenly seems more elusive. She knows she needs an education, but is beset by doubts. What if she simply isn’t any good? What use is high school to a girl who is destined to spend her life on a farm? And even if she passes the test, how will the family afford to send her to school? So the stakes are high. Not only must she pass the test, but she is determined to win the scholarship—the legacy of Queen Victoria’s visit—that will enable her to fulfill her dream of a higher education. And the pursuit of that scholarship puts her in direct competition with her dearest friends—Ilse, Teddy, and Perry. Ilse, consumed by the notion of her father’s impending marriage to her nemesis, Dr. Iris Campbell, is barely capable of thinking at all. Teddy, like Emily, knows that the scholarship is his only hope of a better life. And Perry mysteriously vanishes on the very morning of the exam. The three friends set off to Summerside filled with a sense of adventure, and more than a little trepidation. Their journey takes some unexpected twists and turns: a chance encounter with a handsome young wanderer, Jack Haszard, a clandestine, late-night escapade—and a passionate kiss.

2. The Taming of the Ilse Burnley

1h

Ilse Burnley is in a spin. The inevitable has happened: Iris Campbell is now in residence at the Burnley house, and wedding plans are well underway. Ilse can view this event only as an act of betrayal by her father; he should have married Laura when he had the chance, and Ilse isn’t about to let him forget it. In Ilse’s colourful psyche, Iris Campbell becomes the Evil Stepmother incarnate. Iris, meanwhile, is determined to mold Ilse into a model young woman, and her endless lectures on posture, diet, exercise, and healthy living are doing nothing to endear her to her future stepdaughter. Ilse revolts in dramatic fashion, as only she can, creating unbearable tension in the household. When that isn’t enough to derail the wedding, she makes a bid for freedom, planning to stow away on a steamer. This decision tests her friendship with Emily and her father’s love. And the wedding takes place at last, but not without incident.

3. A Bill of Divorcement

1h

A bright and beautiful day at New Moon Farm: Jimmy returns home, and the Murrays rejoice. The atmosphere in the old house is suddenly buoyant. But the family soon learns that they’ve unwittingly become part of a pact with Blair Water’s devil-in-residence: Ian Bowles, who has finagled a share in the farm and is now in a position to control their lives. It’s a problem that needs a solution. Enter Jack Haszard, the young wanderer encountered on the road to Summerside, with a shocking offer: if Laura was to divorce Ian, she could retain her rights to New Moon. But the price is high—so Emily concocts a crackerbarrel scheme: she’ll marry for money to pay for Laura’s divorce.
