Voula disobeys her "Old World" father and sneaks out to the school dance. But when Stephanie gets too drunk to deliver her speech, Voula has to take over, risking exposure of her deception.

Feeling unfairly treated by Mr. Raditch, Yick puts his name on an old paper of Stephanie's to test his teacher's response. Meanwhile, Joey sells phony drugs to Melanie and Kathleen.

Rick, the school tough guy, is a loner who rarely speaks to anyone. When Joey visits Rick's home, he is horrified to discover that his new friend's bruises are inflicted by his own father. Joey wants to help but doesn't want to betray Rick's confidence.

Responding to sexist taunts, the girls' swim team challenges the boys' soccer team to a battle of the sexes. But when star swimmer Melanie gets teased about her first bra, she pulls out of the race. Meanwhile, Yick and Arthur attempt to speed the process of puberty.

Whispered stories about Caitlin's favorite teacher, Ms. Avery, hint that she is a lesbian. Troubled by the accusations and by doubts about her own sexuality, Caitlin confronts Ms. Avery, who helps her understand that rumors never tell the whole story.
