The murder brings back vivid memories for Dalziel as fifteen years earlier he headed an investigation into the disappearance of another young girl from the same village - Mary, the daughter of Chloe and Walter Wulfstan. The killer was never found.

Following a long campaign protesting her innocence, Cissy Kohler has been released from jail after serving 35 years for murder. Now Dalziel finds himself under investigation for her wrongful conviction. To save his reputation Dalziel decides to re-investigate the murder from 1963 and finds that it may have been a case of national security rather than a crime of passion.

When a young man, Zack, is found dead at a rave club, Dalziel and Pascoe are under pressure to find out who was the dealer of the drugs that killed him. When the drugs themselves turn out to have been laced with poison, Dalziel and Pascoe start to scrutinize Zack's social circle as they search for possible suspects. Is it blackmail, drugs or just plain old sexual jealousy that holds the key to Zack's death?
