In the police world, a case is either "hot" or "cold". For a murder to be considered "hot," one must have a warm body, a suspect, opportunity, motive, evidence and the will to prosecute. Without these, the file is passed down to the Cold Squad. Known variously as "God's Waiting Room," "The Morgue," and "Death-By-Boredom," the Cold Squad was a virtual burial ground for old, burnt out investigators and old files until Sergeant Ali McCormick (Julie Stewart) arrived on the scene.

Cold Squad is thrust into action after a pair of fireman stumble across a mass grave in the basement of a suburban home. All of the victims are male, ranging in age from 18 to 30. They only good news about this horrific scene is that they also believe they have the killer, Andrew Frawley, the 65-year-old homeowner, who died from a heart attack. Not your typical serial killer, but it looks like they're going to clear up a few cold cases. The cops must now go about the grim business of telling the relatives the fate of their family member.

Mickey enters Cold Squad and there is talk of Gray Larkin, Vancouver's answer to OJ Simpson. Gray was accused of killing his father and although convicted in the tabloids, he was exonerated during his trial. Gray has since taken over his father's business and despite the negative publicity has remained a wealthy man.

Ali volunteers her experience in a training capacity at the Body Farm, a place where young detectives observe corpses in their natural state. But wait – there are 13 corpses instead of 12. That's one body too many.

Primed to leave on her first vacation in over a year, Ali is called to duty when Ivan Lenchino, a handsome detective from the Russian Police arrives in town to investigate the suspicious death of a Russian hockey player. Sergei Dimitri and three teammates were killed after the van they were driving crashed following a game in Williams Lake. This seemed like nothing more than a terrible accident until Sergei's father, mother and sister turned up dead, the victims of a Mafiya extortion attempt gone bad. Sergei's younger brother, Mikhail recently signed a lucrative NHL contract and Ivan is worried that the Mafiya are now after him.

Nicco arrives at a sting just as his ex-partners, Pete Chorney and Mike Golan are about to bust in on suspected cop killer, Hoppy Kurton. A police stun grenade explodes filling the hotel room with smoke. It's chaos as Nicco and Mike chase down a hysterical prostitute while Pete begins to viciously beat Hoppy. A gun to his Hoppy's head, Pete intends to take justice into his own hands, but at the last second Nicco talks him out of it.

6. Slave to the Job

Ali and Frank watch from a distance as ERT officers take position outside of a Shaunessy mansion… BAM! The battering ram makes little work of the front door. Guns drawn, the ERT rush the residence and overtake the suspect, Sam Siegel… sleeping on the couch. Ali wonders if all this wasn't a tad excessive for tax evasion, but she soon learns that the investigation of Mr. Siegel connected him to Zednick Voltrabov, a lawyer who was shot and killed in an unsolved murder. Investigation of Siegel for tax fraud revealed that he and Zednick were business partners in a string of "massage parlours" which acted as a front for a prostitution ring.
