For over 110 years dreams have been sparked and satisfied in the Kaufhaus des Westens ("Department Store of the West"). The KaDeWe is Germany's main-stage for the interplay between goods and money. Those looking for luxury in Berlin will find it here. Yet, the country's main department store is more than just a giant center of retail - it is a place with an unique and exceptional history. Opened in 1907, the KaDeWe survived the German Empire under Kaiser Wilhelm II, the Weimar Republic, Hitler and the Cold War. And despite countless injuries, it is still Germany's number one shopping address. With the help of archival footage that hasn't seen much light yet, the film will tell the turbulent history of the KaDeWe till the present day. It will also give a glimpse into the future of the department store, which - facing the challenges of the digital age - will soon undergo a daring modernization program.
