About
Sandy Edwards (Toni Collette), an ambitious geologist, suddenly finds herself having to baby-sit Hiromitsu (Gotaro Tsunashima) a taciturn Japanese businessman. Hoping to strike up a business deal, she agrees to take him on a field trip around Western Australia's remote Pilbara desert. Against the background of the outback these two diametrically opposed strangers are to find themselves thrust together in a potentially life or death situation. As they journey further and further into the desert, they leave more and more of what they know about each other and themselves behind.

Reviews
"The full arc of Toni Collette's performance reveals itself, and we see that the end was there even in the beginning. This is that rare sort of film that is not about what happens, but about what happens then."
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times
"Japanese Story is a simple, austerely told tale. But there is something memorable, even haunting, about it."
Richard Schickel, TIME
"Aided immensely by the sweep and beauty of Ian Baker's precisely framed widescreen camerawork and the sleek editing of Jill Bilcock, Brooks succeeds in presenting a credible portrait of a woman whose attitude toward life is changed by her unexpected confrontation with powerfully conflicting emotions."
