About
Why stay away from the Book of Enoch? It is common for Evangelicals to warn against reading Enoch and other literature of the second temple period simply because it's not in the Bible. But what is the Book of Enoch (aka 1 Enoch)? 1 Enoch is a Jewish book dating to 200-300 years before Christ, which elaborates on the story of Noah from Genesis 6 and following. Many Evangelical Christians don't realize that 1 Enoch also influenced many authors of the New Testament, especially Jude, Peter, and John. Who was Enoch in the bible? He was a biblical character, predating Noah by a couple of generations, who lived a righteous life and was taken up by God without dying. In 1 Enoch, he engages the spiritual world of the flood narratives, participates in the judgment of fallen angels, and recounts the apocalypse at the end of days.
The Watchers and the Holy Ones is a narrative reading of 1 Enoch: The Book of the Watchers. It will serve as a primer for Evangelical Christians who want to engage the literature for the first time and see how 1 Enoch illuminates the New Testament theology of judgment and the afterlife.
