Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 'The Valley of Fear' is the fourth and final Sherlock Holmes novel. In it, Holmes receives a coded message from an associate of Professor Moriarty that reveals a plot to kill a country gentleman. Arriving at the ancient moated house too late, the case soon becomes a murder mystery for Holmes and Watson involving secret societies, murderous gangs, double-identities, and of course, the notorious Moriarty.
