Petula is young, breathtakingly beautiful and, after her father's death, stricken with grief and with poverty too.
Because their dilapidated and ancient family Manor is all but falling down and now she is at the mercy of her supposed 'protector' her dissolute gambling loser of an uncle, who plans not only to sell her off in marriage as if she was cattle, but worse still, he plans to pocket the lion's share of her dowry!
But then Fate or rather the poor driving of one of the estate workers intervenes by causing a carriage accident, which brings the dashingly handsome Major Adrian Chester to Petula's door seeking a wheelwright or a place to stay.
