The Trees of the Field

Laurel is juggling college while caring for David, her seven-year-old brother, as their volatile and warring parents have split for the last time, leaving Laurel to cope with her mother's mental illness and her father's escape into a new marriage. Shame has driven her to self-imposed isolation, convincing her that her life will never change. Fear of abandonment has done its work resulting in her determination to protect her brother, provide him with a secure childhood, and to protect her own heart from anyone who gets too close. Then a call one Sunday afternoon changes everything, sending her in a new direction, and into something she's always wanted, but always feared.
