The Deceased Mattia Pascal is a novel in which Luigi Pirandello explores the mysteries of identity. It tells the story of a man who, tired of his life as an archivist and marriage, decides to travel to Monte Carlo, where luck allows him to make a huge fortune in the casino. It is on returning home that he learns that, by mistake, he was considered dead. He decides to start a new life with a fortune and another name, thinking in this way to free himself from commitments and obligations.
