Using personal documents and primary sources which are contained in this work, Leonard Chodzko wrote one of the first histories of the Polish Legions in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. This is the seminal work on the subject, from which all other works start. It traces the history of the Legions from the fall of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the rise of its leader — Jan Henryk Dąbrowski.
