#1 Empathy is the ability to understand and feel what a person is experiencing, and it is achieved by understanding the person's goals and what procedure and philosophy they follow to accomplish them. Mental models are a deep understanding of a person's motivations and thought-processes, along with the emotional and philosophical landscape in which they are operating.

#2 A mental model is a diagram of user behaviors. It is created by talking to people and seeing patterns, then organizing those patterns from the bottom up into a model. The top half of the diagram represents product features that are intended to be created, while the bottom half represents concepts that are supported by those features.

#3 The mental model is a visual representation of the best solution to a problem. It is a story about the viability of your business strategy for a particular solution. In Figure 1. 2, dark green indicates a primary match for the feature. Light green indicates additional secondary matches for the feature.

#4 The mental model is the entire picture that becomes the heart of your strategy. It is a diagram that shows how a certain segment of people typically accomplish something, with the things you are making aligned to the depicted concepts.
