In a future not to distant than our own, tough as an old pair of leather Cuban heeled boots with a take-no-prisoners attitude, proud half-first nations Australian famous rock singer and leader of the Octagon Peace Movement, Black Alice, is the voice of the youth. Branded a dissident by the totalitarian government, the Secret Service Directorate (SSD) learn the Octagon will stage a demonstration from a ferry against a nuclear submarine scheduled to arrive in Sydney Harbour thus breaking an existing anti-nuclear treaty. Fearing riots the President orders Alice eliminated. The SSD solicit government scientist Dr Secta to dupe Alice into having an experimental hologram made of him, which would permit him to tour a world that due to conflicts, is starved of concert performances. But Secta has conspired to dematerialize Alice into digital dust to be permanently lost in the ether. The ruse succeeds and Alice vanishes. However, in a wicked twist of fate, he is accidentally freed from his digital prison 113 years into a post-apocalyptic future. Trapped in the subterranean remains of Sydney, he must fight for survival against mutant beasts, unearthly monsters, and bloodthirsty barbaric warlords in a desperate bid to understand why his world had been destroyed. When he discovers the truth, that he alone had been responsible for the collision of the protest ferry and the submarine, triggering a global nuclear war that all but obliterated mankind, he seeks the means to return to the scene of the nuclear accident to prevent it. He succeeds but pays the ultimate price: his molecular structure has been permanently altered and he once again dematerializes only to manifest in yet another dimension-Alice has accidentally become the world's first time traveler.
Believing his unstable molecular condition to be attributed to Dr Secta's experimental holographic process, Alice learns otherwise when he manifests in the fifth dimension and meets En-Ki, an alien entity trapped inside a glowing orb. En-Ki explains that he had altered the genetics of Homo Erectus to create Homo Sapiens and, as a result was imprisoned by his brother En-Lil for eternity in the orb. En-Ki had encoded a special quest gene in his creation's DNA set to be triggered in only one individual once humankind had reached the potential to destroy itself-that time is now and the individual carrying the quest gene is Black Alice.
