Beginning with his 1919 masterpiece, Winesburg, Ohio, Sherwood Anderson exercised an immense influence on American fiction writers. "Anderson was the father of all my works," declared William Faulkner, "and those of Hemingway, Fitzgerald, etc. ... He showed us the way."
