About

As with any gland or organ system, the pituitary gland serves as a site for several disease processes. Some originate within the gland itself, while others relate to infectious, inflammatory, and neoplastic processes that arise elsewhere and either involve or compromise the gland in some way. In past works by Dr. Lewis S. Blevins, Jr., he covers most aspects of pituitary tumors, diabetes insipidus, and hypopituitarism in our series of books; however, "Pituitary Disorders" is different-it provides detailed reviews of several other conditions. While some were mentioned in previous books, this represents a deep dive into the world of neuroendocrine practice. These conditions are fascinating, broad in scope, and constitute approximately 40% of patients seen in Dr. Blevins Jr.'s clinics.

Take a close look at MRI images throughout the book. You'll notice that many of these conditions appear remarkably similar. Yet they are all subtle in their difference and can be suspected based on clinical and radiographic findings by experienced physicians. However, biopsy is often required to confirm many of these diagnoses and permit specific treatment.

Most knowledge herein has been gained from clinical practice, lectures, discussions with colleagues, and clinical remembrances. Dr. Blevins Jr. always says that his patients are his best teachers and best students. This book is for them and those whom he hasn't met. Dr. Blevins Jr. has attempted to draw on his clinical experiences to provide an in-depth overview of the topics covered. The motivation for this book comes from several places-the desire for physicians-in-training, other health professionals, general endocrinologists, interest, and surgeons to have something they can reference for these rare conditions. Lastly, Dr. Blevins Jr. is often told that former students ask one another, "What would Blevins do?" Well, here it is, an introduction to his thoughts on these conditions.
