About

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 66% of the U.S. adult population is overweight and 32% is obese. That's a lot of overweight people without nice legs. Despite the overflowing bookshelves of weight loss books, the U.S. remains the fattest country in the world and continues to get fatter every year. Most people who go on a diet and lose weight gain the weight back. People desperately need to know and understand how to keep the weight off. What is unique about those who succeed?

The answer is buried deep in the archives at the Weight Control and Diabetes Research Center in Providence, Rhode Island: The National Weight Control Registry, the largest study of individuals successful at long-term maintenance of weight loss. The registry includes more than 10,000 individuals who complete annual questionnaires about their current weight, diet and exercise habits, and behavioral strategies for weight loss maintenance. Founded in 1994, it is a gold mine of weight loss advice, containing extensive data on individuals who have lost at least 30 pounds and maintained a weight loss of at least 30 pounds for at least one year.

Thirty-seven studies have been published in scientific journals using the data from the National Weight Control Registry, yet have been ignored by weight loss gurus and book publishers. The general public does not read scientific journals and so is not aware of the information. Shockingly, no one has written a book for the general public to introduce the data and give practical advice based on it. That's horrible, because the public needs to know! Lose It does just that. More than simply browsing the registry, the book gathers and presents the pertinent data, critically interprets it, and shows readers what other people in their same position have done and continue to do to lose weight and keep it lost.
