Eventually the Romans destroyed the fabled city of Carthage. What could never be erased, however, was the brilliant legacy of the man who has been called the world's finest soldier. Magnificent is the word for everything Hannibal did - he moved huge armies against impossible odds, he won great battles, and he survived tremendous defeats. He was famed for his military genius, but his incredible overland campaign against Rome with foot soldiers, cavalry, baggage train, and elephants astonished the ancient world and has amazed historians ever since. Later he proved, by masterful reorganization of the defeated Carthaginian government, that he was an astute statesman as well as a warrior.
