About

They met at an antiwar march in D.C. He played lead guitar for Boston's top rock-protest band. She was a journalism major at Mount Holyoke College. That best-selling interview launched her career.

His band spiraled from stardom into chaos. An unknown assailant bludgeoned his vocalist to death with a champagne bottle. After months of accusations and questioning, he was released. So was their last album, which went platinum. He disappeared. She took a summer assignment in Paris and married a fellow writer.

Twenty years later, Unsolved Mysteries is reopening the murder case. He's heading for Paris with a new band. Her mission, if she chooses to accept it, is to stop history from repeating itself.

As the daughter of New York private detective Archie Goodwin, journalist Cory Goodwin Thorne has sleuthing in her blood. She tried to quit journalism to save her crumbling marriage, but that didn't work. Now she's covering a quirky exchange program for upscale Bostonians called Hands Across the Sea. Their "mystery destination" is Paris, where Cory fell in love with Larry Thorne, aspiring novelist and heir to a cosmetics fortune. Their "mystery band" is Quasi & Company, led by ex-famous guitarist Dan Quasi of The Rind.

No one's seen or heard from Dan Quasi since lead singer Mickey Ascher was brutally murdered in his Back Bay penthouse and The Rind broke up. Now Hands Across the Sea's sponsors, Unsolved Mysteries, Cory's editor at Phases, and Cory herself want to know: Where's Dan Quasi been hiding all these years? Why pick a Seine cruise, the Eiffel Tower, and EuroDisney for his comeback?

To Cory, landing in Paris feels like sanctuary. The band's peace-love-and-music nostalgia trip melts the language barrier by pulling hosts and ambassadors together onto the dance floor. With her husband three thousand miles away, is this her chance to search for lost time? But the past and present keep stomping on each other's toes. While Dan insists the musicians are only here to work, their musical mystery tour is turning noir. Who's sent a death threat to a French official? Who's barred the band from playing at the Eiffel Tower? Is it a coincidence that their car doesn't show up, their hotel reservations vanish, and they're crossed off the EuroDisney guest list? As drugs, sex, and long-buried grudges start exploding around Quasi & Company like land mines, Cory realizes there's only one way back to the U.S. It's time to confront the elephant-in-the-room question: Who killed Mickey Ascher?
