A Symphony of Remembrance

Stefan Carter's escape from the Warsaw ghetto means he must rely on the kindness and courage of strangers and spend his teenage years in hiding, isolated from all that he knows, wondering whether he will survive. Stefan grows up in Warsaw, Poland, barely aware he is Jewish and part of a small, assimilated community steeped in Polish culture. But in 1939, Nazi Germany occupies Poland, and Stefan suffers the same fate as the rest of the Jewish community when he is forced into the Warsaw ghetto. At risk of deportation to the Treblinka death camp, Stefan manages to escape the ghetto and go into hiding, isolated and in constant danger. In a Jewish neighborhood in Warsaw, Stefan Carter grows up without much of a connection to Judaism.
