Rugrats is an American animated television series created by Arlene Klasky, Gbor Csup, and Paul Germain for Nickelodeon. The show focuses on the day-to-day lives of a group of toddlers, most prominently Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, and Lil, and their imaginative adventures. The series premiered on August 11, 1991, and ran for 9 seasons, totaling 172 episodes. It is Nickelodeons third-longest-running animated series, behind SpongeBob SquarePants and The Fairly OddParents. The series is also notable for depicting observant Jewish families. The series Rugrats was created by the then-husband-and-wife duo of Gbor Csup and Arlene Klasky, along with Paul Germain. The trio were also animating The Simpsons at the time and decided to create their own series after Nickelodeon announced that they were launching their own line of animated series.
The original pilot episode of Rugrats, titled "Tommy Pickles and the Great White Thing," was never actually aired. This pilot was eventually released on DVD by Paramount Home Entertainment in 2001.
The character of Angelica was based on a bully from Paul Germains childhood. Although Klasky initially disliked the character of Angelica, she eventually came to appreciate her role in the show.
