About
An Outcast of the Islands is the second novel by Joseph Conrad, published in 1896, inspired by Conrad's experience as mate of a steamer, the Vidar.
Disreputable and immoral are Peter Willems stock and trade. A clerk at Hudig and Co in Malaysia, he passes his time bullying those around him and embezzling money from his employer to finance a business deal he hopes will make him a partner in the firm.
When his treachery is revealed, Willems must go on the run, and takes a position on a remote Malaysian trading outpost. But even there, his own corruption catches up to him and he must take refuge in a hidden native village; one where his lust for the tribal chief's daughter threatens to betray him anew.
An Outcast of the Islands was only Conrad's second novel, but in its theme, in its impressionistic use of scenery, and, and over all, in the enormous richness and power of the writing, it predicts Conrad's position as a literary figure of the highest rank.
