About

The English Revised Version (ERV) of the Bible, published between 1881 (New Testament) and 1885 (Old Testament), represents the first major, officially authorized revision of the King James Version (KJV).
Initiated by the Church of England, the revision was undertaken by two committees comprising over fifty British scholars. A key aim was to incorporate advancements in biblical scholarship and textual criticism, particularly the study of older, more reliable Greek manuscripts discovered since 1611. The translators were instructed to introduce changes only where necessary for accuracy, seeking to preserve the dignified style of the KJV where possible.
While more accurate in many places, the ERV's sometimes rigidly literal translations and retention of archaic pronouns ("thee," "thou") drew mixed reactions. It served as the basis for the American Standard Version (1901). Though later surpassed by modern translations, the ERV holds a pivotal place in the history of the English Bible as the crucial scholarly bridge between the KJV and 20th-century translations.
