Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) is one of the most important philosophers to this day. The foundation for the metaphysics of morals is one of the most important writings of Immanuel Kant. It was first printed in 1785. Numerous reprints attest to their relevance to this day.
Here Kant introduces an essential rule for moral action, the categorical imperative: “Act only according to the maxim by which you can also want it to become a general law.” Kant does not develop this rule from human experience, but from the pure reason. It applies to all reasonable beings, not just to humans. A person cannot foresee the consequences of his actions. If he wants to act only for the sake of an end, the result, his act would be only a means.
