About

The novel follows the fortunes of three characters, Esther Summerson, Ada Clare, and Richard Carstone, and the relations of these three young people in the Jarndyce household. The story they tell embodies Dickens's merciless indicment of the Court of Chancery and its bungling, morally corrupt handling of the endless case of Jarndyce v. Jarndyce, giving the novel its scope and meaning. Included is one of Dickens's most savage judgements on an indifferent society.

Reviews

"Perhaps his best novel…When Dickens wrote Bleak House he had grown up."
G. K. Chesterton
"Dickens could not have performed better than [Simon Vance] does here. With a motley cast of characters to challenge the skill of any narrator, his brilliant dramatizations range from a homeless street urchin to an arrogant barrister, from a canny old windbag to a high-minded heroine who deserves the happy ending Dickens affords her. [Vance] is also persuasive as the indignant voice of the author
