About

Phoebe and her friends Diana and Anne live in splendid isolation in a country mansion and are the target of vicious village gossip. When their gardener discovers a body in the disused ice house, a 10-year-old murder investigation is reopened by Chief Inspector Walsh. Could the body be Phoebe's missing husband?

When a naked, decomposed corpse is found in the disused ice house in the grounds of Streech Grange, Chief Inspector George Walsh jumps to an obvious conclusion. The body must be that of David Maybury, who disappeared 10 years ago. Without waiting for forensic identification, he reopens the murder investigation, which for him has been an obsession.

The police interrogation has reawakened Phoebe's memories of the nightmare she suffered 10 years ago. Then when Walsh orders a thorough search of the entire estate, the women's privacy is invaded by scores of policemen, as well as by the growing presence of the media and angry villagers outside the gates. As more clues are discovered, they serve only to confuse the investigation into this baffling crime.
